The Center
The Alan E. Beer Center for Reproductive Immunology and Genetics was established by Dr. Alan E. Beer in 2003. An internationally known and respected physician and scientist, Dr. Beer specialized in the treatment of infertility, implantation failure and recurrent pregnancy loss. Sadly, Dr. Beer passed away in May of 2006.
Raphael B. Stricker, M.D., and Edward Winger, M.D. continue to carry on the good work started by Dr. Beer. Our patients continue to receive testing and treatment as established by Dr. Beer, and research continues to be done to improve and further hone tests and treatments.
Our research has shown that during a normal pregnancy, a unique type of immunity occurs in the mother that shuts off the rejection immunity in her uterus. This prevents rejection of the fetus and placenta and aids in the fetus' growth and development. If the mother's immune system misreads this message and does not camouflage the fetus, the pregnancy does not take or results in a miscarriage. Such a pregnancy failure often indicates an autoimmune response or an allergy in the mother that develops to the placental cells of her fetus. This immunity is often associated with subsequent complications for the mother and fetus if pregnancy occurs without immunological treatment.
By using specialized testing, our doctors can identify couples who may be conceiving normally and miscarrying, as well as those who conceive through in vitro fertilization, but repeatedly fail to become parents. In our research program, we outline treatment protocols that stimulate the proper immune response in the mother, thereby, resulting in a successful pregnancy in most patients. Once a pregnancy occurs, the patient is co-managed by our program staff and the patient's obstetrician/gynecologist.
