Edward E. Winger, M.D.
Dr. Winger comes to the Alan E. Beer Center as an experienced immunopathologist. Board certified in Clinical and Anatomic (tissue) Pathology, Dr. Winger is also certified as an immunopathologist. He brings to the Center extensive experience in developing and overseeing both general clinical laboratories and immunology laboratories. He was the director and founder of Immunodiagnostic Laboratories for twenty years before it became a "center of excellence" for the Laboratory Corporation of America (Labcorp) where he continues to oversee immunoassay development and implementation of assays for clinical trials operations and submission to the FDA.
Dr. Winger has developed a wide variety of immunologic tests as well as molecular tests at the level of DNA and RNA. Of particular interest have been assays of cellular immunity. His work has encompassed both quantitative assessment of white blood cells as well as assays of cellular functional activity. His laboratory was one of the first laboratories to quantify various cell types altered in HIV disease. He subsequently studied cellular immune function by various techniques.
Because of his work, particularly in cell based immune testing, Dr. Beer asked him to join him in his research efforts. Over the last five years, Dr. Winger has focused his efforts in the area of reproductive immunology. He has functioned as the director of the Alan E. Beer Laboratory for Reproductive Medicine and as Dr. Beer's scientific associate. Upon Dr. Beer's untimely passing, Dr. Winger has assumed management of the Center as well.
An area of particular interest to Dr. Winger has been the study of white blood cells that express CD57, a cell marker whose function has been poorly understood. Altered significantly in HIV disease, he used it to assess disease progression. Because cells with this same cell marker are found in cells in the uterine lining, he has expanded his investigations into the area of reproductive medicine. Suspecting that they may be the same cells involved in inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, he is focusing his research interests in understanding their role in reproductive disorders.
